Our planet has some truly awe inspiring gardens that are too good to keep locked away in private. We’ve been asking readers to share their favorite gardens of the world and have listed some of the beautiful suggestions here.
Apologies to the hundreds who have sent in their hidden garden sanctuaries for the summer competition. There are simply too many to mention. However we will bring you more in our Part 2 Gardens of the World update, once the competition concludes.

Portland Japanese Garden
This stunning garden in Portland, USA, brings peace and calm to the heart of a hectic city. The Garden stretches out over 9.1 acres of land and features many different garden spaces such as ‘The Strolling Pond Garden’, ‘The Natural Garden, ‘The Sand & Stone Garden’ and many more, each with their own unique features and benefits. The garden was designed by Professor Takuma Tono from 1963.
Tresco Abbey Gardens
This beautiful garden is located on the Island of Tresco in the Isles of Scilly, United Kingdom. The gardens span out over 17 acres of land that were established nineteenth century and were originally a private garden to Augustus Smith within the grounds of the house he had designed and built.
Singapore Botanic Gardens
The Singapore Botanic Gardens are located in the Orchid Road shopping district, Singapore. The tropical gardens have been there for 158 years and counting. The Botanic Gardens have been ranked as “Asia’s top park attraction” since 2013, by TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards and you can see why! The National Orchid Garden (located within the garden) has the largest orchid collection of 1,200 species and 2,000 hybrids.
Villa D’Este, Italy
The Villa D’Este (above and below) has a breathtaking garden located in Tivoli, near Rome. The villa dates back to the 16th Century and is renown for its Italian Renaissance Garden and it’s fountains. The estate today is an Italian state museum and is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.
Kew Gardens, United Kingdom
Kew Gardens has been named-checked scores of times so far by our competition entrants. This popular historic garden is located in South West London and houses more than 30,000 different kinds of plants! The gardens were founded in 1840 and are managed today by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, an internationally important botanical research and education institution. An interesting fact about Kew Gardens is that it has its own police force, Kew Constabulary, which has been in operation since 1847.

Botanical Garden, Rome 2 weeks ago
I couldn’t let our garden tour conclude without mentioning the lovely Botanical Gardens in Rome where we recently spent 2 blissful weeks. A stone’s throw from our accommodation in Trastavere were lovely rolling informal Italian gardens and potager.
